Bean picks up his 100th win
January 12, 2017

Cape wrestling came off a 4-0 snowed-in weekend at the Capital Duals in D.C. and wreaked havoc on shorthanded Polytech Jan. 11, winning 63-12. The faster-than-a-snow-melt match featured a total of six forfeits, two pins and a major decision.

The closely contested matches were Vinnie Diego with a 1-0 decision over Noah Deneumoustier at 138, Cory Lawson’s 4-0 decision over Avery Mayan at 160 and Chris Handlin’s 10-4 win over Jaden McCove at 170.

Cape will travel to Grapple at the Brook this weekend in Springbrook, Md.

Cape will host the Smyrna Eagles Wednesday, Jan. 18. The Eagles are currently 4-0 in dual meets and wrestle at the Virginia duals in Hampton this weekend. Smyrna is reported by some wrestling trackers to be slightly off, meaning maybe you have an outside chance of beating them. They beat Sussex Tech Jan. 11 by a score of 63-15, starting the match at 138 and recording seven straight pins. Ravens wins were notched by Andrew Hawkins at 220, Carl Shirmer at 285 and Mason Rolph at 106.

“We are, like every other team, getting injured guys back to full strength and trying to fix some things going into the last third of the season,” said coach Chris Mattioni. “The Smyrna match will be another great night for high school wrestling at Cape, just like the Sussex Central match. Our fans do a great job, and it has to inspire the younger kids to want to be a part of it.”

Note: Cape 145-pound senior transfer Zeke Bean picked up his 100th career victory with a 16-0 tech fall over Polytech’s Emannuel Davis.
