December 6, 2016

The Cape wrestling team started the season Dec. 3 by winning the team trophy at the one-day Bishop Ireton Invitational, a tournament featuring 11 teams from Pennsylvania, D.C., and Virginia.

Teams following Cape in points were WT Woodson, Covenant, Sidwell Friends, Episcopal, Bishop Ireton, Edison, St. Albans, Bishop O’Connell, Potomac School and Rocky Ridge.

The Vikings, the sole Delaware team in the mix, won seven of 14 weight classes to go along with two runners-up and two third-place finishes.

Champions included Anthony Caruso at 120, Max Norquest at 132, Zeke Bean at 145, Vinnie Diego at 152, Cory Lawson at 160, Chris Handlin at 182 and Holden Kammerer at 195.

Handlin won the Outstanding Wrestler Award.

Bean is a transfer from South Carolina, where he finished third in the state last year.

“Overall, it was a great weekend,” said coach Chris Mattioni, now entering his 22nd season. “We had four starters out of the lineup to injuries. It should be a great year. We wrestle at home Wednesday against Lake Forest.”

Darnell Bailey (126) and Brandon Harpe (220) both placed second. Bailey got caught and pinned while leading in the third period, while Harpe was seeing his first varsity-level competition.

Justin Wright (138) and Zach Flores (285) both placed third.
