Capital One donates $34,000 to Cape Henlopen State Park

Supports Youth Conservation Corps Green Team
November 28, 2016

Friends of Cape Henlopen State Park President Stuart Schmidt announced that Capital One has donated $34,833 to the Friends. The money was awarded to support the Delaware State Parks Youth Conservation Corps Green Team.

The program provides high-quality summer jobs and environmental opportunities for young people ages 16 to 21. Green Team members serve in teams of five with a team leader, conducting environmental stewardship, trails maintenance and park-based projects.

As a result, the teams members gain practical work experience, have outdoor learning experiences and opportunities, and acquire skills that help them enter the job market or higher education programs. For more information on the YCC program, go to www.DEStateParks.com/volunteers/YCC.

Participants in the program spend three-quarters of their time working and a quarter of their time participating in education and awareness activities. Not only do these young people learn work and employment skills, but the majority of them express interest in pursuing careers in environmental science or the parks.

Schmidt said he appreciates Capital One's commitment to supporting youth educational programs and says the Friends of Cape Henlopen State Park are pleased to have been engaged in the effort to secure this grant, which will benefit not just Cape Henlopen State Park but YCC programs in the other two Delaware counties.

The Friends of Cape Henlopen State Park, founded almost 20 years ago, are people who value the beauty and heritage of Cape Henlopen State Park and who have joined together to provide the park with tangible support in a variety of ways. For more information, go to www.friendsofcapehenlopen.org.
