A 41-year-old Maryland man was killed Aug. 8 when a vehicle fell on him as he was trying to remove a part at Donovan Salvage Works Inc. north of Georgetown.

The Salisbury man, whose name has not been released, had used a jack to raise the vehicle while he tried to remove a part, and used a spare tire underneath as a buffer, said Master Cpl. Gary Fournier of Delaware State Police.

The car, which was parked on dirt and gravel, dislodged from the jack and landed on top of him. Witnesses called 911 shortly after 1 p.m., when they saw him trapped. Salvage yard workers moved the vehicle with a forklift before emergency responders arrived.

When EMS reached the scene, they found the man on the ground near a car. They tried to save him, but he was eventually pronounced dead at the scene, Fournier said.

Fournier said a police investigation revealed the man was alone when the car fell, and it's unclear how long he may have been trapped.

The Delaware Division of Forensic Science will conduct an autopsy. No foul play is suspected, Fournier said.
