Carmen J. Marcone, World War II veteran

Carmen J. Marcone, 92, of Milton, passed away peacefully Tuesday July 19, 2016, at the Delaware Hospice Center, Milford.

He was born in Wilmington, Aug. 22, 1923, the son of the late John and Pauline Magnelli Marcone. He was the last survivor of eight siblings. Mr. Marcone proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a paratrooper in the 503 Airborne Division. Prior to being drafted, he worked at DuPont in Edge Moor. He and his wife owned and operated Carmen’s Delicatessen in Lewes, Rehoboth and Milford for many years. They also owned and operated the Milford Café for several years until retirement in 1983. After retiring, Carmen worked at Milford Bowling Alley and served as secretary of the Senior Bowling League for 17 years. He was inducted into the Lower Delaware Bowling Hall of Fame for promoting bowling for seniors.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Doris Hunnicutt Marcone; two stepdaughters, Luanne Holland and husband L.T., and Barbie McDaniel and husband Park; three grandchildren, Kevin Flaherty and wife Catherine, Kelly Riley and husband Mike, and Brittany Benton and husband Bruce; two stepgrandchildren, Cheryl Keffer and husband Jamie, and Brad McDaniel; five great-grandchildren, Jordan and Christina Flaherty, Emma and Declan Riley, and Drake Benton; and stepgreat-grandson, Henry Keffer. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff at Beebe Healthcare for the excellent care that they provided Carmen during his recent hospitalization. A special thank you to his Delaware Hospice homecare team, Lauren, Chelly, Beth and Marge for their kindness and compassion. Our sincere thanks to the staff at The Delaware Hospice Center for making his final days peaceful and comfortable.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday Aug. 6, at 2 p.m., in the Chapel of Berry Short Funeral Home, 119 NW Front St., Milford, where friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.
