Cell on Wheels ready for smartphone traffic

July 19, 2017

With a high concentration of smartphone users hitting the beach this summer, Verizon Wireless has set up a Cell on Wheels temporarily next to the water tower at 229 Rehoboth Ave.

This mobile cell site will help provide a much better mobile internet experience during the busy summer season. The lease will run from June 13 to Sept. 15; Verizon Wireless will pay the city a one-time fee of $8,650 for the use of the land.

The site will then need to be vacated to begin the last phase of construction associated with the City Hall complex project.

City Manager Sharon Lynn said, "Our goal is to improve wireless coverage for Rehoboth's residents, businesses, employees and visitors who utilize Verizon Wireless services. The existing cell tower locations are being exhausted during the summer months due to an influx of visitors to the Delaware beaches. The placement of the COW will assist the existing cell tower locations with providing full wireless coverage within this area of Rehoboth."

The city continues to explore options with wireless carriers that will help improve reliability and data speeds.
