Chair of Honor unveiled in Bethany Beach

Ceremony pays tribute to POW/MIA military members

Under the flagpole on the boardwalk in Bethany Beach, a simple, black chair now pays tribute to more than 91,000 service men and women who never returned home.

The Chair of Honor, recognizing military members missing in action or captured as prisoners of war, was dedicated during a patriotic ceremony Sept. 7.

“When we can recognize the service and dedication of our men and women in uniform … it just makes all of us so proud,” said Brigadier General Michael R. Berry of the Delaware National Guard.

Organizers of the event said this is the first seaside Chair of Honor. More than 450 chairs are found in cities and towns across the country, and 15 are installed at several locations in the First State.

“This chair is for the veterans, the community and visitors of Bethany Beach,” said Rosely Robinson, who worked closely with Bethany Beach officials to install the chair. “Our intention is that everyone that walks past the chair will remember those that never came home and pause for a minute to honor these men and women. In hope that from this empty chair, parents and grandparents will teach their families and children the sacrifices these men and women made for our freedom.  They will never be forgotten.”
