Children’s program offered at Lewes Historical Society March 3

February 27, 2017

The Lewes Historical Society is offering programs geared for students in kindergarten through second grade while school is out Friday, March 3.

There will be two sessions of children's story time, engaging learning opportunities and history-themed crafts, from 10 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 2 p.m. at the Cannonball House Maritime Museum. These programs are free for children only, with a suggested donation of $5 per adult.

The program is titled Fun with Feathers. Attendees will gain knowledge about local waterfowl and make their own feathered hats. The book ”Johnny Longlegs: A Story of Big Birds,” by Susan Tate will be featured. The story tells of a blue heron who meets a surprising friend. It will be read aloud by living history character Mrs. Susan Roland King, a former resident of the Cannonball House. After the story, children will have the chance to learn the bird calls of local waterfowl, make up their own bird dance and create their own feathered bird mask.

The Cannonball House Maritime Museum is significant to Lewes' history, bearing a scar of a cannonball from the War of 1812 when the British bombarded the town in retaliation for citizens not providing supplies to troops offshore. Museum galleries display a history of the Pilots' Association, shipwrecks along the coast, the rise and fall of the Cape Henlopen lighthouse, and the city's menhaden fishing past.
