More than 300 adults and children raised approximately $10,000 in the Children & Families First inaugural Santa Fun Run in Dewey Beach.
Leslie Newman, Children & Families First CEO, said adults and children alike got into the holiday spirit with fun costumes during the Dec. 4 event at the Starboard. In addition to the fun run, which took them down to the Rusty Rudder and back, there was caroling, present stations along the way and games for children to play when they got back.
“It was great to host an event that encouraged parents and children to enjoy quality time with each other while raising funds to help other Delaware children and families,” she said.
Children & Families First is a statewide, private, nonprofit social services agency.
K. Paige Cohan, Santa Fun Run committee member, said she was honored to be asked to serve on the committee.
“I have a soft spot for children and believe having a strong family unit is an essential part of raising healthy and well-rounded children,” she said.
Dewey Beach Commissioner Diane Hanson helped at the registration table before the 1-mile fun run. She said she was impressed with the turnout for a first-time event.
“This is exactly what I want to see in Dewey,” she said of the family-friendly event.
Steve Montgomery, Starboard owner, said he couldn’t remember ever seeing so many children running around the restaurant. But, he said, he wasn’t surprised the families were having a good time.
“Kids love this place,” he said. “I think it’s the shark and the frisbees. These guys did a great job.”
