Christian Storehouse receives refrigerated van

February 20, 2017

Representatives from the Food Bank of Delaware and the Georgetown Walmart officially passed off the key for a brand-new refrigerated van to the Christian Storehouse at a special presentation Feb. 14. Thanks to a $50,000 donation from the Walmart Foundation to Feeding America, the largest domestic hunger-relief organization, the Food Bank of Delaware purchased a brand-new refrigerated van for the purpose of picking up perishable food from local retailers.

“Walmart and the Walmart Foundation are pleased to be a part of supporting hunger relief efforts across Delaware,” said Karrie Denniston, Walmart Foundation senior director for sustainability. “In 2015, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation committed to helping provide 4 billion meals to people in need over the next five years.  As part of our commitment, we are proud to work with Feeding America, the Food Bank of Delaware and Christian Storehouse in support of their efforts to get a variety of fresh food to families who need it most.”

In an effort to increase the capacity of its partner organizations to receive fresh foods, the Food Bank of Delaware selected the Christian Storehouse in Millsboro to receive the donated van. Last year the Christian Storehouse received more than 150,000 pounds of food through its partnership with the Food Bank.

“The Christian Storehouse is honored to have been selected by the Food Bank of Delaware to receive this van to further serve our clients who have emergency food needs,” said Christian Storehouse Executive Director Steve Smith. “We provide three paper grocery bags of canned, dry goods and frozen items per family. Area food stores donate daily amounts of fruit, vegetables, meat, bread and desserts, thus, the addition of this refrigerated van will greatly assist us in providing fresher food to our clients. Thank you, Walmart and the Food Bank of Delaware.”

Last year, through a network of 575 partnering organizations, the Food Bank of Delaware distributed 7.1 million pounds of food to 117,000-plus food-insecure Delawareans.

“Our partner organizations are on the front lines in our fight against hunger here in the First State,” said Food Bank of Delaware President and CEO Patricia Beebe. “Providing them with the resources they need to serve more and distribute high-quality, fresh foods is a priority for us at the Food Bank of Delaware. Without our network of partners, we would not be able to efficiently and effectively serve those in need. Thanks to the generosity of the Walmart Foundation, we are thrilled to be able to provide this van to the team at the Christian Storehouse.”
