Christmas in July raises spirits and support for Children and Families First

July 26, 2016

The spirit of St. Nicholas was abundant as over 75 guests rocked around the Christmas palm trees at Crooked Hammock for the inaugural Christmas in July party hosted by the Sussex-Kent Development Committee of Children and Families First July 20.

Children and Families First has championed families and children for over 130 years throughout Delaware with the powerful vision of communities where children are nurtured, healthy, and safe; individuals are valued; and families are strong and self-sufficient. Laura Rimmer, development coordinator for Children and Families First, was overjoyed with the positive response to the event. She said, “We have an amazing volunteer committee in Sussex County; their tireless efforts and abundant energy to spread awareness of Children and Families First is absolutely priceless to us.”

The casual yet festive atmosphere, great food, and holiday cocktails set the stage for a fun and memorable night. Among the evening’s many highlights were a jovial game where guests could make a $5 donation to write a name on either the naughty or nice list, and a breathtaking sunset that was enjoyed by all from the back porch bar.

Guests certainly got into the festive spirit, with all sorts of holiday-themed costumes and Christmas flair. “The event was a huge success for us,” said Chief Development Officer Elizabeth Dougherty. “It can be difficult to speak about childhood trauma, but the camaraderie and outreach achieved tonight help us expand a network of supporters who feel empowered to make a difference.”

The official kickoff announcement was made of a brand-new fundraising event for Children and Families First, the Santa Fun Run and Winter Wonderland Party coming to Dewey Beach Sunday, Dec. 4. “The Santa Fun Run is destined to become an ongoing holiday tradition for families,” said Jess Bain, Children and Families First board secretary and Sussex Development Committee chairwoman. “We cannot wait to see hundreds of participants dressed like Santa Claus running through Dewey Beach.”

Leslie Newman, CEO of Children and Families First, who was also in attendance, said, “We are extremely grateful to everyone who so kindly gave us their time to learn about our programs and services. In addition, I would particularly like to thank Rich Garrahan and the Crooked Hammock for the generous donation of the party space. Knowing we have this enthusiastic support in Sussex County will help us to ensure that all children have the opportunity to grow up thriving.”

Through programs which span mental health, healthcare, education and social services, and working together to support families through major life phases, Children and Families First strives to be a source of prevention, change and multigenerational impact.
