Click it or Ticket Campaign returns to Delaware

May 23, 2017

The Office of Highway Safety has announced its participation in the National Click It or Ticket campaign and encourages all motorists to buckle up in all seating positions in the vehicle. Click It or Ticket is a national effort that combines high visibility enforcement and high visibility public awareness and education efforts to change drivers' habits behind the wheel.

"Far too many Delawareans are dying in motor vehicle crashes that weren't properly buckled at the time of the crash. We know that proper restraint use reduces the chance of injury in a crash by more than 50 percent. This is the 17th year that Delaware has participated in Click it or Ticket and we hope to reach even more motorists with this important highway safety message," said Office of Highway Safety Director Jana Simpler.

The Office of Highway Safety has coordinated overtime enforcement opportunities with police agencies throughout Delaware. Nearly every law enforcement agency will be participating by utilizing overtime funds to enforce the state's seat belt law. Every passenger in the vehicle, including those in the back seat must be properly restrained. Proper restraint means that the lap belt must be worn low and snug across the hips and the shoulder belt must be worn across the shoulder and chest, not under the arm or behind the passenger's back. Fines and fees total $83-plus for the first offense.

Officers will be conducting 348 overtime patrols through May 29, including three extra seat belt enforcement initiatives (one per county) to encourage motorists to buckle up. Lastly, Delaware officers will participate with law enforcement agencies from up and down the east coast on May 23rd in a border-to-border enforcement event to enforce the state's seat belt law.
