January 17, 2018

Dick Carter, chairman of the Delaware Heritage Commission, will address members of the Delaware Veterans Coalition at 7 p.m., Monday, Jan. 22, at their bimonthly meeting at FOP Lodge 3, 1584 Kitts Hummock Road, Dover.

He will speak about the Delaware Women's Military Monument slated for unveiling in November 2018. The monument will recognize women who reside in Delaware even though they may have served while attached to another state, according to Carter. Between March 2003 and December 2017, 207 women were included in the 6,930 deaths in the U.S. military in the Middle East.

The General Assembly and the Department of State are the lead agencies on the monument. They are gathering photos for inclusion on the monument but are hoping others will be found in photo albums or family memorabilia representative of Delaware women.

The design will be similar to the World War I monument dedicated last November at the southwest corner of Legislative Hall. The Delaware Women's Military Monument will stand at the northwest corner of the building. It will be include laser-etched images representative of real Delawareans and the roles they played in all branches and periods of service.

The Heritage Commission has been working with the Delaware Public Archives. When the dedication takes place, the Heritage Commission will publish a commemorative booklet that will include many photos not used on the structure.

The Delaware Veterans Coalition meets every other month on the fourth Monday, beginning in January. Membership and meetings are open to all honorably discharged veterans residing in Delaware.
