Corn to Run brings 200 to East Coast Garden Center

October 1, 2016

The East Coast Garden Center is a place that does it right. It’s a hay ride into authentic Sussex County, good people getting along on a Saturday morning, telling stories and enjoying each other’s company.

The fifth annual Corn to Run attracted 200 runners; the footing was uneven and at times boggy, and race director Tim Bamforth put hay bales across the road at the 2-mile mark just to generate funny photos.

Chris Stanley, 47, of Fruitland, Md., was the overall winner in 19:40. Chris does interval training every day, running from his truck to the house carrying packages and dodging dogs.

Katie Kuhlman, 11, was the women’s winner in 23:12. Katie runs on the Mariner cross country team.

Rick Poppleton, 63, was masters winner in 22:00, while Mardiny Ung, 49, won the women’s masters in 23:30.

Caughnery Freese, 9, from Dover was third overall in 21:51, winner of Children of the Corn Run category. His dad Nick Freese rocked the Great Santini, 38, 21:01, placing second and beating his son by 50 seconds.

The competitive 60-69 male age group went to Eric Beam in 24:15, followed by Robert Fitzgerald in 24:51 and Jules Woodall in 25:12.

Gene “Machine” King, 73, ran 28:01 to win the 70-79, while Joann Szczepkowski, 70, ran 27:25.

The next Seashore Striders races are the Run for Betty Gooch 5K Friday, Sept. 30, and the Paradise Grill 5K Saturday, Oct. 1, at 1 p.m.
