DAR Col. David Hall Chapter presents award to Roxanne Nelson

May 20, 2018

The Colonel David Hall Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution recognized Roxanne Nelson May 12 with a Community Service Award. Nelson and her late husband Lenny founded Reading Opens Doors in association with Sussex County Habitat for Humanity. For each family's new home, Nelson provides a new bookcase and a curated selection of age-appropriate children's books, reference books and a parent handbook. For more information about Reading Opens Doors, contact Nelson at 302-227-0205.

During the award ceremony, Nelson shared examples of the types of books families receive, from bilingual dictionaries to cloth baby books to illustrated world atlases. Each child receives a personalized book bag with their individual collection of books. For many families, these are the first books their children can call their own. Since 2007, 100 families including 270 children have received over 6,500 books.

The DAR Community Service Award celebrates an individual or organization who has contributed to the community in an outstanding manner through voluntary civic and benevolent service. Through her work with Reading Opens Doors, Roxanne Nelson epitomizes the intent of this award.

The DAR is a women's nonpolitical service organization whose members can trace direct lineal descent from a Revolutionary Patriot. Those who think a patriot may be in their family tree and would like to apply for membership in the DAR can contact Chapter Regent Denise Clemons at 302-645-2089.
