DAR, Girl Scouts partner to retire worn American flags

November 23, 2017

The Colonel David Hall Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution is partnering with the Lewes Public Library and the Girl Scouts Service Unit 30 to help retire worn flags.

During the month of November, there will be a collection box in the lobby of the Lewes Public Library in Lewes and Edward Jones, 28322 Lewes-Georgetown Hwy., Unit 5, Milton, to receive ready-to-be-retired American flags. The donated flags will be given to the Girl Scouts who will retire them in a respectful and dignified way at a flag retirement ceremony June 9, 2018. Now is a great time to get old flags retired. If flags have become faded, torn, or are otherwise worn, it's time to replace Old Glory.

The United States Flag Code states that, "The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning."

The Girl Scouts initiated this project because many people have old flags that they don't know what to do with. To participate, put the flag folded neatly in a ziplock bag with one's name and a brief note about where it was flown.
