David Ralph Cumber, government retiree

David Ralph Cumber, LCOL, USA (Ret.), died peacefully Monday, April 16, 2018, at home with his loving wife Kay at his side. He was born May 13, 1934, to Leone and Ralph Cumber of Norwich, N.Y.

Following graduation from Niagara University, Mr. Cumber entered the Army as an intelligence officer. He served 22 years in various postings, including two tours in Vietnam. Following his military career he worked for several government contractors as an analyst and settled in Lewes for retirement.

Mr. Cumber is predeceased by his parents; daughters Judy and Mary Ellen; and granddaughter Stephanie. He is survived by five children: Steven and Lisa (Cottrell) Cumber of Stafford, Va., Thomas and Kathy (Haines) Cumber of Gainesville, Va., David and Karen (Bussard) Cumber of Virginia Beach, Va., Seana Cumber of Lewes, and Cathy and Steven Gray of Blue Hill, Va.; 17 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; his sister Barbara and husband David Edwards of Johnson City, N.Y.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Monday, April 23, at 11 a.m. at St. Edmond Catholic Church, 409 King Charles Ave., Rehoboth Beach, where friends may call beginning at 10 a.m. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va. at a future date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Mr. Cumber's name may be sent to Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963, or St. Edmond Roman Catholic Church, 401 King Charles Ave., Rehoboth Beach, DE 19958.

Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes.
