Delaware Eye Institute addition nearing completion in Rehoboth

February 26, 2017

The Delaware Eye Institute in Rehoboth recently reaffirmed its long relationship with the Whayland Co. by hiring the Laurel-based construction management firm to build another addition at its coastal Delaware location.

The now nearly completed project includes a 4,500-square-foot addition to its current Rehoboth Beach facility. It's the latest in a series of bids awarded to Whayland by the ownership of the Delaware Eye Institute over the last 15 years. "We pride ourselves here at the Whayland Company on being able to forge strong bonds with our clients, and we love nothing more than when a former client comes back to us when we're needed," says Steve Hentschel, Whayland president. "The Delaware Eye Institute provides an incredibly valuable service to residents of Sussex County, and we're extremely pleased that they trusted us to construct their new addition in Rehoboth."

After building the original structure 15 years ago and an addition in 2007, Whayland’s work on the second addition is nearly completed at the vision care facility run by Dr. David Robinson. The addition will include 10 more examination rooms, a new reception area, a new waiting room, a dilating room, new bathrooms and more to allow for continued client growth.

Since opening its doors in 1950, the management and staff of the Whayland Co. have worked continuously to secure its reputation as a high-value, reasonably priced provider of construction and project management services on the Delmarva Peninsula. The company takes a great deal of pride in forming the type of long-term relationships like the one it has with the Delaware Eye Institute. It's a customer-first mentality and an unwavering commitment to customer service that's made Whayland a major player in Delmarva's construction management realm for more than half a century.

"We value very much our relationship with Dr. Robinson, just like we value the relationships we have with all of our clients," says Hentschel. "Without our clients, our business means nothing, so we try to show them every day how much they mean to us, and to our business."

Whayland's history with the Delaware Eye Institute dates back to 2002, when the company constructed the main building at the Rehoboth Beach site. This first project primarily included a clinic and a surgical wing, along with a reception area. The first addition took place five years later and included a retina wing. The current addition project  is scheduled for completion by mid-March. One constant at all three jobs has been the work of John Wilson, an on-site superintendent with Whayland whose relationship with Robinson dates back more than two decades.

"Dr. Robinson and I go back to even before I was with the Whayland Co., to when he first broke out on his own in the early ‘90s," says Wilson. "I've enjoyed working with him over the years, and we always try to bring in top-quality subcontractors and deliver a fantastic product. He's always been pleased, and that's obviously what we like to hear." The Delaware Eye Institute has three locations, in Rehoboth Beach, Millsboro and Dover, offering outpatient surgery, a full-service optical shop, a retina center and more.
