Delaware Guidance Services appoints new chief of psychiatry

January 31, 2018

Delaware Guidance Services for Children and Youth Inc. recently named Gunit Kahlon, MD, as the agency's chief of psychiatry. In this role, Kahlon oversees the psychiatric and medical aspects of the agency's evidence- and community-based clinical services statewide. In addition, she oversees continuous quality improvement processes for psychiatry at DGS, serves on the senior leadership team, and creates innovative practice models as the healthcare landscape continues to change.

Kahlon joined DGS in November 2015 as a child and adolescent psychiatrist. In that role, she provided psychiatric and prescribing services at the DGS Dover, Lewes and Seaford offices while also overseeing advanced psychiatric nurse practitioners working in those clinics.

Kahlon completed her training at Virginia Commonwealth University and at the Virginia Treatment Center for Children where she was chief fellow. Most recently, she completed her master's degree in health administration from St. Joseph's College of Maine.

"This is an exciting time for Delaware as we think about how to make sure our children and families get the healthcare and mental health services they need to be healthy and happy," said Kahlon. "I am so pleased to be a part of DGS, and I look forward to the work ahead."

DGS serves children with the highest of needs – those struggling to make sense of a world in which parents wrestle with addiction, neighborhoods are unsafe, and a promising future is hard to imagine. The clinical staff meets children where they are, whether that means at home, at school or in their community, and works to identify and build on innate strengths. DGS helps Delaware's children and families meet and gain strength from adversity so they can realize both resilience and independence.
