Delmarva Christian students participate in prayer rally
More than 200 Delmarva Christian students in eighth through 12th grades and more than 20 DCS staff members traveled to Legislative Mall in Dover to participate in Franklin Graham's #DecisionAmerica Prayer Rally. Organized through Billy's Graham's Evangelistic Association and Samaritan's Purse, Graham's visit to Delaware was the 41st stop in a 50-state-capital tour. The purpose of the tour is to proclaim the gospel, encourage Christians to get involved in government and public office, and pray for the nation.
"Our school's theme this year is Laus Deo, Praise be to God," said DCHS Director of Instruction Matt Kwiatkowski. "So, today's prayer rally helped to model this idea of how, as Christians, we can be unified in praise through prayer. Also, as teachers, we realize the need to help our students understand the foundational and Christian principles in which our nation was founded, and then, compare them to the events that are occurring in our culture today."
Although the trip meant that the teachers had to forgo some classroom time, it proved to actually enhance the academic curriculum. The students learned some valuable and practical lessons in Graham's 45-minute message to the crowd.
"As Graham led the prayers, it was clear that he was not using the platform to persuade the listeners to vote for a particular candidate," said Kwiatkowski. "The purpose was to remind us, as Christians, to pray for wisdom and guidance. This was a very powerful message for our students, our staff, and for every Christian. We were reminded to seek God's will in every aspect of our lives, even when we are selecting those who'll govern. We may not remember all that was said today, but we will remember that."
Kwiatkowski can't emphasize enough the importance of these community experiences to supplement the lessons learned in the classroom. "When we speak of a living curriculum at Delmarva Christian, it means we counsel, we teach, we model, we help our students walk through the day-to-day, in addition to providing them the rigorous academic lessons they'll need for success," said Kwiatkowski. "And sometimes that means we have to leave the four walls of our buildings."
