Delmarva Christian volleyball remains undefeated

Royals move to 5-0 with win over Tech
September 22, 2017

Seniors Gabrielle Book and Camryn Breasure teamed up on the front line of the Delmarva Christian volleyball team to smash eight kills each in the Royals’ 3-0 win over visiting Sussex Tech Sept. 19 in Georgetown.

The Royals had a grueling five days, playing to a 3-2 victory over Caravel Sept. 15, traveling to Worcester Prep and winning 3-0 Sept. 18 and then the 3-0 victory over Tech Sept. 19 without any practice in between.

The Ravens held their own in the first set before falling 28-26 in a back-and-forth contest.

“I think having three matches in a row hurt us a little bit,” said Royals head coach Jim Berger. “We just weren’t in sync at all, and Tech kept the pressure on and kept the ball in play, and we were making some really bad unforced errors.

“If we’re not in system, not getting the ball to our setter, we have trouble getting the ball to our middles, and they are a big part of our offense. Toward our second and third set when our passing improved, we were able to get the ball to Camryn, Gabrielle and Hannah [Picconi], and that really helped.”

They Royals grounded the Ravens in the second and third sets 25-16 and 25-11.

“We finally conquered our unforced errors in the third, and, unfortunately for Tech, they had a lot of unforced errors in the third set,” said Berger.

“The first set was really close,” said Breasure. “We haven’t had time to practice. I think we just had to get ourselves back together and work as a team to get the momentum back on our side, and then we were able pull off the win.”

Sophomore Ashlyn Stonebraker had 17 assists and eight digs from her setter position.

The Ravens were led by Paige Shockley and Kayla Booros who delivered with nine digs each, while Shockley and Megan Perdue each had four kills.

The Royals junior varsity moved to 4-1 on the season with a 2-0 win over the junior varsity Ravens.

The Royals will host Salisbury Christian School Monday, Sept. 25, and the Ravens will travel to Woodbridge Tuesday, Sept. 26.
