Keynote speaker Aaron Andrews is a retired colonel from the U.S. Army and past president and CEO of the United Negro College Fund. Andrews spoke to both parents and students. To the parents he said “If you don’t show them you support them, then they will not perform the way you want them to.” To the students, Andrews said about opportunities, “Put yourself in a position when that door opens , be prepared to step through it.”
The showcase of students featured students from the Youth Program performing songs, music and poetry. Kalia Strand read May Angelou’s poem “Let Freedom Ring.”
Isaih Parsons played “Let Freedom Ring” on a snare drum.
With the audience quietly singing along, Dion Johnson sang “His Eye is on the Sparrow.”
Arrionna Taylor saigna emotive version of “He is Able.”
The Sussex County Alumnae Chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority presented scholarships to nine area high school seniors at its May Week 2017 Youth Showcase program May 7 at the First State Community Action Agency. Keynote speaker for the event was Aaron Andrews, a retired colonel with the U.S. Army. Members of the Youth Program also performed for the gathered supporters.
