Denn and O'Neill to speak on ‘What Happens After You're Accused of a Crime in Delaware’ Nov. 15

October 26, 2016

The Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice will hold a Public Forum on the defense and prosecution of individuals accused of a crime in Delaware Tuesday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m., at the Trinity Faith Christian Center, 15516 New Road in Lewes. Matt Denn, attorney general of Delaware, and Brendan O'Neill, the chief defender of the Office of Defense Services, will lead the discussion.

The meeting is a follow-up to SDARJ's Sept. 20 Police Chiefs' Forum about policing initiatives to improve community relations, address crime and violence and ensure public safety. Many who attended that meeting asked that they continue to look at all aspects of the criminal justice system, especially those that most immediately affect families and communities.

The Nov. 15 forum will continue the conversation and will increase awareness of the respective roles and responsibilities of the defense attorney and the prosecutor, the laws that bind them, and the reforms that are needed to impact positively on mass incarceration and recidivism in the criminal justice system. It is an opportunity to learn about the many laws in the Delaware code that guide the determinations of guilt or innocence, the length of prison sentences, the use of plea bargaining and other aspects affecting real justice.

The audience is invited to ask questions and express concerns about the defense and prosecution of those facing incarceration.
