Designer Show House transforms fixer-upper

Tours of latest Village Improvement Association run through May
April 24, 2018

New Jersey interior designer Mark Polo wasn't sure what to think when he first toured this year's Village Improvement Association of Rehoboth Beach designer home.

“Everything was brown,” said Polo, owner of The Urban Dweller.

VIA member Carol Hall said she and fellow member Ann Sebastian came across the home at 42 Pennsylvania Ave. while driving around town. After a quick look inside, she said, she knew it would be great for this year's VIA Designer Show House event. But she also knew it would be a lot of work.

“This is the most extensive improvement we've done,” she said.

The three-story home is in The Pines neighborhood of Rehoboth Beach featuring three bedrooms and a children's hideaway room on the third floor. Four generations of the Kadow family have vacationed at the home, which the family had built in 1979 by Hudson Builders.

Hall said Benjamin Moore supplied paint for the entire home, joining show house partners Fehrenbach's Flooring Plus, GroupJDesign, Hotel Rehoboth, Jolly Trolley, Lupo Italian Kitchen, Camp Rehoboth Community Center, Sposato Family Vineyards and Dewson Construction Company.

The show house event is held every other year because of the amount of time it takes to get a home ready, Hall said.

“Ann and I have been working on this for 16 months,” she said, adding designers and partners involved with the home have been just as busy for the final reveal.

The VIA kicked off its annual Designer Show House April 25 with a sold out event at Hotel Rehoboth. The event featured tours of the Pennsylvania Avenue home, which will continue on weekends throughout April and May. For $25, anyone interested can tour the home that was transformed room-by-room by designers Polo, Boardwalk Builders, J. Conn Scott, DCOR Design Center of Rehoboth, Dreamweaver Interiors, Driftwood Design/Lane Builders, Ocean Boulevard Furniture, Peter E. Designs, Smart Homes of Delaware and Timeless Design. The backyard was also transformed by Bella Terra Landscapes, while the front was landscaped by Outside by Erin Walls and Executive Lawn and Garden.

Tours will be held 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on all scheduled days beginning Thursday, April 26, through Sunday, April 29; Thursday, May 3, through Sunday, May 6; Thursday, May 10, through Saturday, May 12; and Thursday, May 17, through Sunday, May 20.
