Dewey Goes Pink 5K race was red hot for 11 a.m. start

Elation and hydration are the rules of the road
October 13, 2017

Dewey Goes Pink hit the highway Oct. 7 with 1,315 athletes running the 5K, while another 1,000 walked, rolled and strolled the 1.5K, and maybe another 500 hung out to strengthen the cause to raise money to support those with breast cancer and to keep the money local.

The 11 a.m. start made for a hot race to run or walk. The October sun and humidity were kicking buttocks long before the two-lane common finish chute. The entire event had a Tour de France festive nature about it, but anyone who has been diagnosed and endured and survived treatments knows the struggle is real.

Kyle Brightbill, a 42-year-old Philly boy, bested the field in 16:59. He was chased by Kevin Danahy, 42, the first masters runner, in 17:12; Francisco Puac, 32, in 17:29; Joey Andrisani, 35, in 17:30; and Will Tikiob, 19, in 18:35.

Bridget Danner, 32, was the first female, in 20:43. Rounding out the top five on the women’s leaderboard were Alise Reynolds in 20:51, Michele Poppiti in 21:05, Tara Cavaselis in 22:21 and Jenn Schwomeyer in 22:32.

Just 102 of out 1,315 runners broke the eight minutes per mile pace, which proves it’s about the cause and not about using the 5K for speed work for the upcoming Rehoboth Marathon in December.

Tracking women age-group champions - it is their race, after all - 75-79, Gayle Kelley, 49:57; 70-74, Pat McNabb, 32:01; 65-69, Linda Marvin, 26:46; 60-64, Elaine Pinder, 25:35; 55-59, El Jones, 22:51; 50-54, Mardiny Ung, 23:15, 45-49; Alise Reynolds, 20:51; 40-44, Tara Cavaselis, 22:21; 35-39, Jenn Schwomeyer, 22:32; 30-34, Bridget Danner, 20:43; 25-29, Jenn Lee, 23:23; 19-24, Josie Nixon, 24:14; 14-18, Amaya Daisey, 25:53; 10-13, Reagan Ciabattoni, 26:04; and 9 and under, Avery Miller of Lewes, 29:16.
