Dewey lucky to have Marc, Diane and Dale

September 8, 2017

My daughter is working for the second summer in Dewey Town Hall. To think that I would allow my daughter to work in a place where the town manager is accused of sexual advances and the other accusations makes me angry. My daughter wouldn't allow it either.

I am a feminist. I have been since the 1960s. I helped co-found the Capitol Hill Women's Political Caucus when I worked on the Hill. I worked with a number of women in D.C. to successfully get the D.C. City Council to authorize a Rape Crisis Center. I have been involved with human rights issues for years. My daughter is also a feminist.

The accusations against Marc Applebaum, in my opinion, are wrong. He is a more than competent and able town manager. When all of these complaints surfaced, most of the employees at Town Hall had a lunch for Marc to show their support. My daughter agrees with them. In fact, Dewey Town Hall is well managed with terrific employees. They are hardworking and knowledgeable. They are also really nice people, which is not an easy feat for government employees.

When I first met Marc I didn't like him. Some of my friends thought he supported certain groups of citizens over others. I have argued with Marc about a number of these and other issues. Through these interactions I grew to respect the man. The town is a tough place to manage, but he pulled people with differing views together to achieve common goals. This was no small accomplishment. Prior to Marc becoming the town manager, the turnover of people in the job was constant. Diane Hanson as mayor was working beyond overtime, trying to stay on top of addressing problems that were nonstop.

Dewey Beach has improved significantly since my husband and I bought our condo in the 1990s - something I thought would never happen. The town is cleaner and safer with many families (and dogs). Diane Hanson and Dale Cooke among others have dedicated their time and effort, and the "new" Dewey Beach shows the result of all of their work – and Marc's.

The bottom line for me is that Marc is one of a kind – the kind of person Dewey Beach is lucky to have.
