Joe Zuber said when he and Darryl Ciarlante sold Dos Locos in 2016 after 17 years in business, they knew they were going to get back into Rehoboth’s food and bar scene, but they just didn’t know how.

“We were a little too young not to do nothing,” said Zuber.

A year of traveling and relaxation later, that opportunity presented itself when the building that was home to the Double L bar on Rehoboth Avenue became available.

“We knew this was something that would be fun, but a little less stressful because we’re not going to serve food, and we don’t need as many employees,” Zuber said of the space that’s licensed as a tavern, which means food doesn’t have to be served.

The first thing the pair did was rename the space Diego’s Hideaway, a nod to Ciarlante’s nickname when they’re at their second home in Puerta Vallarta, Mexico. Zuber said local Spanish speakers have trouble with the name Darryl, so they call him Diego.

The second thing they did was give the tired property a fresh face, which has included new display racks in the bar, a new 20-tap alcohol distribution system, new sound and lighting systems, a new ceiling, and most importantly, Zuber said, a complete renovation of the patio space.

The patio was a really underutilized area, Zuber said. Custom-made planters were installed, trees were added for shade and noise control, and there will be a Tito’s Vodka yappy hour, he added.

Zuber said, like the Double L before, Diego’s Hideaway is a gay bar – but “we’re open to everybody.”

The home of the former Double L has undergone some serious renovation, but Zuber said Diego’s Hideaway will continue at least one tradition – Man Dance on Saturday nights.

Zuber said to begin with hours will be 3 p.m. to 1 a.m., but the number of days a week the bar will open is yet to be decided.
