Dimitra Yoga opens in Rehoboth

New Lewes practice on the way
December 9, 2016

Namaste.

The Indian word of greeting and departure is one of the first things people see entering Dimitra Yoga. It’s also appropriate as the company greets two new facilities, departing another.

The now-Rehoboth Beach-based yoga studio has moved from its one-time home in Plantations in Lewes to a new studio at 43A Rehoboth Ave., above Cold Stone Creamery. Dimitra Yoga founder Dimitra Kotanides said the company will open a second studio in Lewes in late January. While the Lewes studio was planned all along, the Rehoboth facility more recently became available.

Dimitra Yoga will hold about 30 classes per week at the Rehoboth location, Kotanides said, with classes ranging from beginners, to high-intensity yoga, aerial yoga and stationary yoga. She said Dimitra Yoga also offers kids classes and workshops.

The Swedish born, Greek-raised Kotanides came to the United States in 2001 and found yoga, somewhat reluctantly at first.

“Yoga found me. It was something I stumbled upon with a friend. I had to try it a couple times before I liked it. The first time I couldn’t stand it because it was too slow. It was something I did because it keeps me sane. It keeps me happy. I can’t really distinguish what yoga is for me anymore. It’s just everything. What I do is yoga. I found a purpose in life. Something to belong to,” she said.

Kotamines began teaching yoga at a gym in New Jersey. She moved to Lewes in 2006 and got involved in a yoga studio here. Kotanides eventually bought into the studio and it became Dimitra Yoga.

“It’s a community. We do everything together. They help me stay on task,” she said.

One of Dimitra Yoga’s special features are early morning beach classes, which are offered in Lewes, Rehoboth, Bethany Beach and, in 2017, Dewey Beach. The beach classes are donation-based, Kotanides said. The money given to local nonprofits.

“That is part of what yoga is. You give as much as you take,” she said.
