In an effort to address a need for more physicians in the Lewes area, two doctors have plans to construct a 9,900-square-foot office complex at 1537 Savannah Road near Wescoats Corner.

At its Jan. 26 public hearing, Sussex County Planning and Zoning Commission deferred on a vote on a conditional-use application filed by R&K Partners.

Dr. Vinay Hosmane, a Newark cardiologist, said he wants to come back to Sussex County and bring more doctors with him, especially more primary care physicians and another dermatologist. “In Sussex County the demand for doctors has risen dramatically,” he said. “My friends ask me where do I find a doctor here?”

His father, Ramachandra Hosmane, is a urologist in Lewes who is affiliated with Beebe Healthcare and Nanticoke Memorial Hospital. He's been in practice in Lewes for 39 years with an office on Savannah Road.

Hosmane said the proposed facility could offer some rental space on a rotating basis to allow more doctors access to the Lewes area.

Sussex County Council's public hearing on the application is scheduled for 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 7.

David Hutt, the applicants' attorney, said since 1980 more than 30 conditional-use applications for offices and other commercial operations along Savannah Road have been approved by county officials. He said two medical facilities border the 1.5-acre parcel, Bayview Medical Center and Bayside Health Associates.
