Doodles in Dewey to romp April 27-28

April 20, 2018

Calling all Doodles! It’s time to pack up the owners and head to Dewey Beach for the 13th Annual Doodles in Dewey starting at 10 a.m., Saturday, April 28, on the beach at Saulsbury Street. The day of fun on the beach is a fundraiser for Food & Friends, a Washington, D.C.-based organization that delivers homemade food in the metropolitan area to those suffering from life-threatening illnesses.

Event festivities include a raffle, a parade with doodles in costume, and a silent auction. Raffle items include hotel gift certificates, a weekend stay at a Dewey Beach condo, and doggie gift baskets. Commemorative T-shirts, water bottles, sweat shirts and bandanas are among items available for purchase that day.

A choice of yappy hours at Ivy, Northbeach and Gary’s restaurants in Dewey Beach will kick off the event Friday, April 27.

To register, go to www.doodlesindewey.org. All donors will receive a sports bag filled with goodies for their generosity. Many hotels are dog-friendly and have reduced rates for the event.

The first Doodle Romp was held in 2005 to raise money for Food & Friends. It honored a young man who was a teacher, counselor and dog lover who found Food & Friends to be indispensable during his final months.

Just a few folks with their dogs raised $200 at the inaugural romp. Last year, more than 1,000 people and their dogs raised $7,800 for Food & Friends. Families attended from as far away as Canada, Massachusetts and New York.

Doodle owners and their dogs are fun-loving and friendly. It’s a spectacular event for a serious cause with hundreds of doodles of all sizes and colors and ages running free on the beach. For more information, go to www.doodlesindewey.org.
