Drug take-back set for Oct. 28

Public urged to turn in unwanted, unused prescription drugs
October 6, 2017

Delaware State Police and the Drug Enforcement Administration invite the public to clear their homes of expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs.

The free and anonymous service will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 28. Residents can drop off unwanted pills and patches to Delaware State Police Troop 4 at 23652 Shortly Road in Georgetown and Troop 7 at 18006 Coastal Highway in Lewes.

Other disposal locations are at Delaware State Police Troop 3 at 3759 S. State St. in Camden, Troop 2 at 100 LaGrange Ave. in Newark, and Christiana Care at 4755 Ogletown-Stanton Road in Newark.

The Lewes Ferry Terminal, 43 Cape Henlopen Drive, Lewes, will also serve as a collection site from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Oct. 28. Delaware River and Bay Authority Police Administrator Col. Richard Arroyo said the program is strictly confidential. "No questions or requests for identification will be made by law enforcement personnel present," he said. "In fact, participants will be asked to remove any personal information from bottles or packages."

Last April, Americans turned in more than 730,000 pounds of prescription drugs at more than 5,000 locations nationwide. In 12 years, the DEA and its partners have taken more than 7.1 million pounds of pills. Unused medicines left in homes are susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. Flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash also can pose safety and health hazards.
