Early morning rain doesn’t deter 256 Que Pasa runners

Everyone can play meteorologist on their too big for prime time cellphone and the runners’ wrist watch GPS piece of Fitbit; they may even record the moment of vaporization from a lightning bolt, but none of that stopped runners from rolling through the thunder Saturday morning at the Que Pasa 5K because “What’s happening?” is racing.

Two hundred and fifty-six people emerged from shelter to start the 5K race. Puddles were everywhere and there to run through. There was no thunder and lightning during the race.

“We do not start a race on a wet road if lightning is in the area,” said Director Wayne Kursh. “The weather apps all showed a steady light rain.”

Will Rehig, 24, a young teacher at Saint Andrew’s in Middletown, was first to get back in 16:42.  He was joined on the top 5 leaderboard by Kyle Brightbill, 42, from Philly (also first masters) in 16:56, Patrick Boettcher, 17:36, Joey Andrisani, 18:01 and Peter Morse, 18:10.

Jennifer Brill, 27, a Virginia Tech graduate, was the first woman in 18:28. Jen was joined on the leaderboard by Annie Monagle 19:47, Alise Reynolds 21:14, Susan Dunn 21:21 and Natalie Quigley 21:25.

Maya Yngve, 9, won the U9 age group in 33:14.

Erin Fitzgerald, 36, won her age group in 23:55. Her son Connor, 8, was age-group champ in 23:55. Patrick Fitzgerald, 36, ran with his 4-year-old son Liem in 31:35.  The upcoming races2run calendar includes Arena’s Run the Goat in Milford at 6:45 p.m., Friday, Aug. 18; Breast Fest 5K Aug. 19; and the inaugural Cpl. Stephen Ballard Memorial 5K Sunday, Aug. 20, at 8:15 a.m. at Arena’s on Rudder Lane in Georgetown.
