Elegant Slumming Fine Jewelry offers Shinola Watch Willard program

Only one of 18 retailers selected
October 21, 2017

Elegant Slumming Fine Jewelry in Rehoboth Beach has added the Willard Program to its presentation of men's and ladies’ Shinola watches. Elegant Slumming is one of only 18 independent retailers in the United States to be selected to offer this program. The program is named for Willard Bixby, one of the founders of the iconic shoe polish brand from which Shinola has inherited its name. The Willard Program allows customers to choose a watch case style and watch strap to build a Shinola watch that looks and feels tailored just for them.

Shinola was founded as a small-scale shoeshine manufacturer in 1907. Shinola's business boomed during World War I, and the company achieved pop culture status for the WWII colloquialism, "You don't know s**t from Shinola." Shinola was re-imagined in 2011 as makers of modern watches, leather goods, bicycles, journals and other products well made and built to last. Shinola celebrates the beauty of manufacturing, the preservation of craft, and investment in the American workforce.

Shinola watches are built in midtown Detroit in a state-of-the-art watchmaking factory located in a heritage-rich former GM building constructed in 1928. Shinola partnered with Ronda AG, a watch movement maker based in Switzerland, to help build the factory and train Detroit citizens in the delicate process of movement and watch assembly. Shinola chose Detroit because of its more than a century history of quality manufacturing.

The quartz movement of every Shinola watch is composed of between 46 and 95 components, all hand-assembled. The watch case is stainless steel and each watch utilizes a sapphire crystal. All watches are individually numbered on the case back in the sequence of production. The leather watch straps are made in the Detroit factory by Shinola or at Hadley Roma in Largo, Fla., and use only leather sourced from American tanneries. The rubber straps are 100 percent USA made by Stern Rubber Company in Staples, Minn.

Elegant Slumming Fine Jewelry, at 33 Baltimore Ave. in downtown Rehoboth Beach, is the perfect partner for Shinola and its build-your-own-watch Willard Program. The business has served the Sussex County community for over 21 years, offering beautiful designer jewelry, custom design and repair work, and impeccable customer service. Like Shinola's commitment to its hometown of Detroit, Elegant Slumming is committed to Rehoboth Beach and its surrounding communities.
