Elizabeth G. Gruber, worked at Sea Shell Shop

Elizabeth Georgeine (Sands) Gruber, 94, of Georgetown, passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 11, 2017, at Harrison Senior Living in Georgetown.

She was born in Reading, Pa., daughter of the late Percy P. and Helen (Gehret) Sands. Mrs. Gruber served in the U.S. Navy Waves from 1943-45, and received an honorable discharge with the rank of yeoman second class. She was a member of American Legion Post 28 in Millsboro, and charter member of the Women's War Memorial in Washington, D.C.

She was a homemaker, and enjoyed the time she spent at the Cape Henlopen Senior Center in Rehoboth as well as the CHEER Center in Georgetown. A longtime resident of Rehoboth Beach before moving to Georgetown, she loved to craft with items found on the beach, such as seashells and driftwood, and worked as crafts person and designer for The Sea Shell Shops of Rehoboth for many years.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, James Henry Gruber; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Marian I. Miller and her husband Howard, Lucy Guenveur and her husband Penn, and Gayle Seelig and her husband Arthur.

She is survived by a daughter, Diane Gruber of Georgetown, and a son, James Powell Gruber of Leesport, Pa.; three grandchildren, Dawn Fretz, Christopher Gruber and Nick Psaroudakis; as well as three great-grandchildren, Paige Psaroudakis, Brendon Murray and Aidan Fretz. Her extended family encompassed an additional four stepgreat-grandchildren and two stepgreat-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, April 27, at noon, in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market St., Georgetown, with visitation after 11 a.m. Inurnment with military honors will immediately follow at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro.
