Elva Mae ‘Sue’ Renshaw, loving matriarch

February 13, 2017

Elva Mae "Sue" Renshaw (nee Boyer), 92, of Rehoboth Beach, passed away Saturday, Feb. 11, 2017, at home, surrounded by her loved ones.

Sue was born May 20, 1924, in Mifflinburg, Pa. She is survived by her daughters Karen Yates (Richard) of Drayden, Md., Deborah Kaplan (William) of Rehoboth Beach, and Lizabeth Ann Taghavi (Babak) of Oakton, Va.; her grandchildren Sarah Yates Sauri (Marc) of Austin, Texas, Matthew Yates of Portland, Ore., and Kivan Taghavi of Oakton; her great-grandchildren Morgan Sauri and Ethan Sauri of Austin; her brother Millard Donald "Moon" Boyer of Mifflinburg; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Peter Cyril Renshaw (1920-97); her parents Myrtle Hauck Boyer and Ralph Calvin Boyer; her brothers Roy Calvin "Jake," Glenn Henry "Pete," Earl Hauck "Curly," and George Robert "Bob"; and her sister Marion Jean "Jean" Miller.

Sue served in the U.S. Marine Corps Women's Reserve during World War II from May 1945 until she was honorably discharged in July 1946. After marrying Pete in 1948 and moving to Ridley Park, Pa., Sue raised her three daughters and taught kindergarten at St. Mark's Lutheran Church from 1964-92. She was an extraordinary teacher who positively impacted the lives of her many young students. She was a devoted congregant of St. Mark's Lutheran Church until she moved to Delaware in 1996.

Sue was a kind and gentle person who gave of herself unconditionally. Her grace and light was a beacon for anyone in need; she generously gave what she had lovingly and without hesitation, even if it meant doing without herself. Those who were fortunate enough to know her loved her, and she was called "Mom" by many, which gave her great joy.

Services will be held Thursday, Feb. 16, at 1 p.m., at the Columbarium of Epworth Cemetery, 187 Henlopen Ave., Rehoboth Beach. The family requests donations to The Home of the Brave, Women's Division, 6632 Sharps Road, Milford, DE 19963.
