Emily C. Black, retired teacher

Emily C. Black, 89, of Seaford passed away Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2018, at Life Care at Loftland Park in Seaford.

Emily was born in Lincoln, the daughter of the late Lester E. and Viola (Maull) Clendaniel. She grew up in Milton from the time she was very young. She graduated college from State Teacher's College in West Chester, Pa., and taught health and physical education at John Dickinson High School near Newark for most of her career, retiring in 1984 to Broadkill Beach.

Emily was a past president of The Milton Century Club, and enjoyed many years of tennis and golf. Throughout her life she also enjoyed playing bridge, crossword puzzles, gardening, calligraphy, candle making, candy making, and spending summers at Broadkill Beach.

She was a member of Goshen U.M. Church in Milton for many years but worshipped at St. John's U.M. Church after moving to Seaford in 1999.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herman F. Black in 2011; and her brother, Lester Clendaniel Jr. She is survived by her son, Christopher Black and his wife Suzanne of Seaford; three grandchildren, Nathaniel Black, Sean Hubbard and Emily Hubbard; and three sisters, Wanda King of Milton, Martha Fisher of Claymont, and Caroline Donovan of Milton.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 24, at 1 p.m., in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal St., Milton, where friends may call after noon. Interment will be in Goshen Cemetery, Milton.
