May 22, 2017

The Veterans of Foreign Wars and Auxiliary Department of Delaware presented an award to Emily Moody, an eighth-grader at Sussex Academy, for her Patriot's Pen Essay. She placed first in the State of Delaware and 15th in the nation, out of 54 states and territories.

The essay contest encourages young minds to examine America's history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting a 300- to 400-word essay, expressing their views based on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW commander-in-chief.

This year's theme was The America I Believe In. Moody earned a total of $1,750 in scholarship money for her placement at the local, state and national levels.
