Evening at the Hook series to open with owl program Feb. 13

February 9, 2018

For the first lecture in the 2018 Evening at the Hook series, the public is invited to join longtime biologist Wayne Lehman as he talks about his experiences with barn owls and screech owls in Kent County, where he served as manager of the county wildlife areas until his retirement. Presented by Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge, the lecture will be hosted at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 13, at the Milton CHEER Center. This change in venue will allow additional seating. No reservations are required. The CHEER Center is at 24855 Broadkill Road (Route 16) in Milton, two miles west of Route 1.

Lehman has been involved in research and management of barn owls and screech owls since the early 1990s; he has banded over 700 barn owls and more than 200 screech owls. Banding provides valuable information on the life span, home range and migratory patterns of the birds and helps with estimating population size. Lehman will discuss how he constructs and maintains owl nesting boxes, methods of banding, and what is and is not known about these intriguing nocturnal birds.
