Family fun with ‘Iron Giant’ at Revival House Aug. 17

August 9, 2017

The later days of August can be a tough time for parents. Vacations have wrapped up; kids' summer activities have come to an end, and reminders are everywhere that school is starting soon. Revival House has chosen the month specifically for families, with Hey! I Got Kids Here, offering food and fun starting at 6 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 17.

On the screen

At 7 p.m., families can enjoy a showing of "The Iron Giant." Set in 1957, the film follows a young boy who befriends a hulking metallic robot from space, and his efforts to evade the U.S. government, which is hell-bent on destroying it. Featuring the voices of Jennifer Aniston, Harry Connick Jr. and Vin Diesel, "The Iron Giant" is a timeless tale of friendship that is as breathtaking on the big screen today as it was on its release in 1999.

On the stage

Professional storyteller and singer Rebecca Jones started offering Snappy Sounds with Rebecca Jones at the Seaford library in 2009. A year later, she became Bookineer Becky - with True Stories of Pirates and Piracy at the Laurel library. She appeared at the Laurel library again in 2011 with One World, Different Stories, in which she used her newfound love of decorating cakes while telling stories, and at the Dover library with Songs of the Seasons during the winter. Jones integrates music into various stories with the use of her autoharp. She will engage the whole family with an onstage reading prior to the film.

On the walls

Delaware native Kyrin Hopkins is a manga artist who began drawing just for fun, but now is taking his talent to the next level. "I was really inspired by video games," Hopkins said. "I would play Mario all day and draw him going through a level or whatever my mind could think of. My goal is to make something as fun and timeless as the things that inspired me." Hopkins' bright, colorful creations will be on display at this month's Revival House.
