Fast times at Bottle & Cork 10-Miler and 5K

UD cross country club steals the show in 5K race

The Bottle & Cork 10-Miler and 5K was run under perfect shoulder season conditions Sept. 9, with 253 runners completing the 10-mile course and another 193 opting for the shorter 5K distance. 

Jeffrey Young, 26, of Wayne, Pa., ran at a pace under six minutes per mile to clock the winning time of 59:07. Connell McCall, 47, of Philadelphia was just behind at 59:28 to win the masters race. Rounding out the overall top five were Keith Johnson, 36, of Wilmington in 1:01:48; Joey Andrisani, 35, of Wilmington in 1:02:00; and women’s race winner Kalyn Fisher, 25, of Mifflinburg, Pa., in 1:02:13. 

Fisher won the women’s race by 10 minutes, as second-place finisher and masters winner Kelly Horowitz, 42, of Landenberg, Pa., crossed the finish line in 1:12:34. Susan Dunn of Laurel finished third and won the 40-44 age group in 1:12:50, while Christina McDermott of Wilmington was just behind in 1:13:04 to win the 45-49 age group. 

The 5K race featured 28 runners from Newark in the top 40 finishers, most of whom were between the ages of 18 and 21. The University of Delaware men’s and women’s cross country club teams made the trip south for the race. Former Sussex Tech runner Sam Hete, 20, took top honors, with a blistering time of 16:20, a 5:16 per mile pace. Close behind was Christopher Kitson, 21, in 16:46. 

A total of 14 runners ran under 20 minutes, with 12 coming from the UD squad. 

Rounding out the men’s top five were Patrick Boettcher, 36, of Newark in 17:02; Brandon Quanci, 19, of Newark in 17:19; and Brendan Jones, 19, of Newark in 17:28. 

The women’s race was won by Julia MacMasters, 18, of Newark in 19:24. Her time was good enough for 10th overall in the fast race. Following MacMasters were Michele Poppiti, 36, of Milton in 20:21; Elise Laframboise, 18, of Beachwood, Ohio, in 20:37; Abby Kaye, 19, of Newark in 20:37; and Emily Magoon, 18, of Newark in 21:01. 

Winning the masters races were David Landon of Bear in 19:23 and Margaret Colvin of Dewey Beach in 22:59.
