A field of 413 runners at the Dewey Beach Liquors 5K July 10 got ‘Housed’ by a 22-year-old from Kulpmont, Pa.
Mikael House doused the field, running 16:18, holding off a following sea of fast people, including Jeff Young in 16:45, David O’Hara in 16:49, William Rehrig in 16:59 and Cameron McLauglin in 17:21.
The first 22 runners broke the 20-minute barrier, while 93 ran under an eight-minute per mile pace.
The leaderboard for women was topped by Kayln Fisher in 18:17, Laura O’Hara in 19:42, Susan Dunn in 20:25, Mijiko Phelps in 21:30 and Diane Ward-Fuchsluger in 22:08.
“A great morning for racing and nice turnout,” said Race Director Wayne Kursh. “Most of our early summer races have been hot and humid.”
Dewey attracts a diverse group of out-of-town runners during the summer from as far away as Texas and a large contingent from Pennsylvania who opt for Delaware over the Jersey Shore.
Linda Schwartz-Chi, 51, a Delaware person, won her age group in 26:04 just ahead of friend and fellow Delawarean Lori Waldee-Warden in 26:52 in a battle of hyphenated names.
Mary Andrisani, 64, from Hockessin won her age group in 30:06.
John Costello, 55, from Middletown won the 55-59 age group in 18:53. Rick Poppleton, 63, won another age group title in 21:14. Jules Woodall, 68, won his age group in 26:01. Doug White won 70-74 in 26:18. Bill McArthur, 76, won his group in 29:15.
The over 80 men’s race saw Rich Warshauer, 81, run 41:49 followed by Jimbo Lyons, 82, in 45:12. The next local Races2Run event is the College Day 5K Saturday, July 23.
