Filmmaker TJ Healy to address veterans coalition March 26

March 22, 2018

TJ Healy of Veterans Story Project will address the Delaware Veterans Coalition at its bimonthly meeting  at 7 p.m., Monday, March 26, at FOP Lodge 3, 1584 Kitts Hummock Road, Dover. Healy is founder of The Healy Media Group, which is taping interviews with Vietnam veterans as part of what is to become a national project.

Oral history is a time-honored tradition, a means of passing knowledge from one generation to the next and an inherently valuable historical record. The Vietnam War is barely mentioned in middle and high schools when it should be an important part of the social studies curriculum, according to Healy’s website.

When “Voices of War - Vietnam” is completed, each individual interview, along with a transcription and the edited documentary, will be available to every school and library in the state.

Copies of Blu-ray discs, along with a transcript, will be available to various government, civic and veterans organizations for distribution.

The completed project, the entire collection of approximately 200 individual interviews and the edited documentary will be forever housed in the Delaware Public Archives, and submitted to the Library of Congress’ American Folklife Center for inclusion in the national Veterans History Project.

Each interview offers a unique glimpse into what it was like to live through these conflicts. These first-person accounts create a foundation for educators to create teacher syllabi, student activities and worksheets. Students utilizing these materials will be uniquely challenged to incorporate the historical information provided into their own personal understanding of the Vietnam War.

The Delaware Veterans Coalition is a statewide organization that advocates with elected and appointed public officials on issues that affect all generations of Delaware’s veterans. Membership is open to all honorably discharged veterans residing in Delaware. For more information, go to www.DelawareVeteransCoalition.com or call 302-697-8384.
