May 19, 2017

With 500 full-sized American flags waving in the background, the Lewes-Rehoboth Rotary Club will kick off its fifth annual Flags For Heroes event with an opening ceremony at 4:30 p.m., Thursday, May 25, at Cape Henlopen High School, Lewes. Sen. Ernie Lopez, R-Lewes, will deliver keynote remarks.

Nitan Soni, opening ceremony chair, said, "Highlights will include a poetry reading by the winner of a Cape Henlopen School District poetry competition on The Flag, and the placing of five dedication flags honoring those who sacrifice to serve our community and our nation." Other features will include a procession of motorcycles led by the American Legion Riders, fire trucks and JROTC cadets leading a color guard. The public is encouraged to join the celebration.

The flags will continue flying throughout the long Memorial Day weekend and will be taken down Saturday, June 3. A large medallion hangs from each flag naming the sponsor and their personal hero. Medallions are presented to each individual sponsor after the event for presentation to their hero. Last year's event raised over $42,000 with net proceeds going to Lewes-area charities.
