Flossie Marie Greene, dedicated teacher

Flossie Marie Greene, daughter of the late Sarah C. Burton an.d Otis Harmon Sr., was born in Ellendale Feb. 2, 1943. She resided in Kansas City, Kan., Washington, D.C., Martinsburg, W.Va., and Fresno, Calif. She departed this life Friday, March 10, 2017, surrounded by family.

Flossie graduated from William Jason Comprehensive High School and Delaware State College (University) with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. She started her teaching career in Dover, then Washington, D.C., and finally Milford School District where she taught fifth- and sixth-grade English and reading.

Flossie will be remember for her years of no-nonsense teaching, gardening skills, voracious reading habits, sewing ability and her volunteer work for the Second Street Players Theater and People’s Place.

She was preceded in death by her husband Eugene Greene; parents Sarah Catherine Harmon and Otis Harmon Sr.; and siblings Albert Burton, James Wilford Harmon, Viola Frazier, Iona Hiland, Morris Harmon, Nelson Harmon and Lawrence Harmon.

She leaves to cherish her memories her daughters Kanika Greene Georges of Ellendale, and Makeda J. Fairbanks of Lewes; her grandchildren Adonica George and Hunter Burgess; siblings Nora Steele, Annie Payne and Otis Harmon Jr.; nieces, nephews, dear friends and her constant canine companion Fluffy.

Celebration of Life service will be Saturday, March 25, at noon with two-hour viewing prior to the service at Mount Zion AME Church, 18211 Beach Hwy., Ellendale.
