January 21, 2017

Doctor Franklin Horner Fry, 80, of Allentown, N.J., passed away Thursday, Jan. 19, 2017.

Born in Woodbury, N.J., Dr. Fry attended Vineland High School, where he met and married his wife, Dale Lois Temple. He received a bachelor of science degree (1960), and a master's degree/PhD in chemistry (1964) from Princeton University. His career in chemistry began at the American Can Company in Princeton, where he became manager of research and development. Dr. Fry also worked at Hunt- Wesson Foods in Fullerton, California, and Hollingsworth & Vose in Walpole, Massachusetts, where he retired as vice president of Research & Development in 1998.

Dr. Fry had a passion for living, which he shared with his wife and five children. Whether it was camping, traveling cross country, or visiting other countries, he shared his adventures with those he loved. He ran dozens of marathons, including the grueling Palos Verdes Marathon, and the prestigious Boston Marathon. His love of learning led him to speak French and Italian. After retirement he taught classes at the Academy of Lifelong Learning in Lewes, including "The Art of the Mystery Novel" and "New Inventions that have Failed." If he wasn't running, he was biking or playing softball. His grandchildren remember his uproarious tall tales of his winning gold medals in the 1958 Olympics in such events as Javelin-catching and Porcupine Pole-Climbing. He was devoted to his family.

Dr. Fry was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Eunice Fry; his brother, Richard Fry; and his sister, Ruth Thornton. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Dale Fry; his children and their spouses: Charles and Ruth Fry, Douglas and Kim Fry, Laura and Bruce Hambrick, Ken and Deborah Fry, and John and Sue Fry; his 11 grandchildren; his three great-grandsons; and many nieces and nephews.
