George B. Horneck, Cape Elks Lodge member

George B. Horneck, 94, of Milton, passed away Tuesday, July 19, 2016, at Delaware Hospice Center, in Milford.  He was born Wednesday, Sept. 21, 1921, in Uniondale, N.Y., son of the late George and Irene (Carman) Horneck.

 Mr. Horneck was a graduate of Baldwin Senior High School in New York, Class of 1939. After high school he worked briefly at the Long Island Typewriter Company, Chase National Bank on Wall Street and Grumman Aircraft Company, helping make F4F Wild Cats and F6F Hell Cats. In November of 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he proudly served his country during World War II. 

In 1946 Mr. Horneck moved to Bethlehem, Pa., where he attended Lehigh University and received his bachelor’s degree in art education. He was a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Fraternity. He taught summer school at Colombia University in New York City and then moved to Stratford, Conn., to teach aviation and general science to high school students. In August 1950, Mr. Horneck then moved to Falls Church, Va., to work at the Armed Forces Security Agency. He continued his career with the NFSA, now the National Security Agency in Fort Meade, Md. In 1973, he retired after working at the Space Program in Cape Kennedy and Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

 After moving to South Bethany, Mr. Horneck sold real estate and built American Timber Cedar Homes. In June 1975, he married the love of his life, Nancy VanderStaay. In 1977 they moved to their home in Milton. Mr. Horneck was a member of the Cape Henlopen Elks Lodge for 36 years. He was a loving husband, stepfather, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, who will be missed by all who knew him.

 Mr. Horneck is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Nancy (Boise) Horneck; his stepson, Gary VanderStaay and his wife Ramona of Seagoville, Texas; his stepdaughters, Shirley Ewald and her husband Mark of Shade Gap, Pa., and Sharon Kneessi and her husband Donald of Annapolis, Md.; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

 A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, July 23, at 2 p.m., at the Cape Henlopen Elks Lodge 2540, 18544 Beaver Dam Road, Lewes.

 Graveside Services will be held Monday, July 25, at 11 a.m., at Henlopen Memorial Park, 28787 Lockerman Road, Milton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Horneck's name to The Cape Henlopen Elks Club Scholarship fund at the address listed above.
