Georgetown Middle School to host Run for Color April 9

March 11, 2016

Georgetown Middle School will hold the second annual Run for Color fun run Saturday, April 9, at 1 p.m. on and around the school grounds. The GMS Run for Color is the school's version of the popular color runs being held throughout the country. This is an untimed race, a noncompetitive 5K in which participants are doused from head to toe in different colors. The run will benefit the Georgetown Middle School track team and programs to promote healthy students at GMS.

This is a perfect race to sign up with friends or in groups, come up with team names, wear the same clothes, and post pictures of everyone having fun. All preregistered participants will receive a commemorative white T-shirt to wear as they run or walk through a 3.1-mile course full of colors.

“I am very excited to be in the Run for Color with my teachers and friends. This is the best fundraiser we do all year,” said GMS sixth-grader Bailey Perdue.

Participants are encouraged to preregister for the event at www.seashorestriders.com. Look for the link to the event on the website's race schedule. Adults and students can save money by preregistering on or before Monday, April 4. Preregistration cost is $10 for students and $20 for adults. After April 4 and on race day, the cost is $15 for students and $25 for adults. Georgetown Middle School is at 301 West Market St., Georgetown.

“I am excited for the Run for Color. Getting covered in color with all of my friends sounds awesome,” said Megan Holding, a GMS eighth-grader.

Logan Pepper, a GMS eighth-grader said, “It is fun to hang with friends while staying active. The color keeps you running for more. It was a great time last year.”

GMS serves students in grades six through eight. In the event of bad weather, the event will be postponed to Sunday, April 10, at 1 p.m.

The third annual Kim Miller 5K will kick off Saturday, April 9, in Georgetown with a 9 a.m. start from the Georgetown Fire Hall. The event is presented by 16 Mile Brewery.

Kim Miller was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer and battled the aggressive cancer for about a year and a half before passing away at the age of 28 in October 2011. Kim was survived by her young son Bryan and her husband Jeff. The race is scheduled in April to celebrate her birthday each year. Kim was treated by the amazing staff at Tunnell Cancer Center in Rehoboth Beach and received support from the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition. The race is organized in her honor, and all proceeds go to the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition in Lewes.

Great times, great food and great beer all come together for a great local charity. Runners will check in at 16 Mile, south of The Circle, and they will be shuttled to the start of the race. Interested participants can go to www.seashorestriders.com to get registered.

“April 9 will be a great day in Georgetown and a great opportunity for runners and walkers to support two great races and two great causes while having some fun and getting a good workout at the same time,” said Color Run Race Director Derek Shockro.

Nifty, nifty look who is 50!

Local runner, friend, business owner and organizer of the popular Rehoboth Seashore Marathon moves to a new competitive age group on Monday, as Marybeth Evans celebrates her 50th birthday. Active in the running community and owner of the Rehoboth Beach Running Company on Rehoboth Avenue, she will now join the 50-59 age group with many of the top runners in the area. The Rehoboth Marathon has become one of the largest economic boosts in the winter months, as the first weekend of December is filled up like a July summer weekend. Active in the Girls on the Run Program as well as many other charities in the First State, MB does a great job supporting the sport of running, road racing and triathlon. A perfect Monday for MB would be a nice morning run followed by a three-mile dog walk, a productive shoe-selling day, mailing her $16 membership to AARP, a few more marathon entries, while ending the day with some sushi, birthday cake and one glass only of red wine. Happy 50th, MB!
