July 31, 2016

Georgetown Police Chief R.L. Hughes visited Primeros Pasos Early Childhood Learning Center in Georgetown July 18. Hughes was at the center to read to the children with the center’s partner Read Aloud Delaware. Hughes and  his officers will be reading to children on a weekly basis. The directors at Primeros Pasos wants to help the children to see the police as community helpers. Hughes spent about 10 minutes with each student, reading on- on-one with a book chosen by the student. Read Aloud Delaware has 180 volunteers in Sussex County reading to pre-schoolers in Headstart programs and at Beacon Pediatrics year round. Hughes, a former board member in the Indian River School District, and also at the Delaware State Board of Education, said of the reading program “I get it. The payoff is good for the community helping to create a better educated population.”
