Geyer Memorial Tournament Sept. 16

August 19, 2016

This year's Andrew Geyer Memorial Scholarship Tournament will take place Friday, Sept. 16, at Rookery North golf course in Milford.

Geyer was a standout golfer for Wesley College in Dover as well as for Milford High School. He died when a drunk driver hit him as he walked along a road in Morgantown, W.Va., where Geyer had gone to see a West Virginia University basketball game.

Friends and family organized this successful tournament to raise scholarship money for deserving Wesley students in his memory. The first such event took place in 2014.

The $100 entry fee for each golfer in the four-player scramble format covers the range balls, greens fees, carts, door prizes and dinner following the 1 p.m. shotgun start. There will also be a silent auction.

Sponsorship opportunities are also available. For more information, contact Rookery assistant golf pro and Wesley alumnus Chris Osberg at 302-684-3000.

DSGA Senior Championship

The Rookery North golf course hosted this year's Delaware State Golf Association Senior Championship, held Aug. 15-16. The DSGA used a mix of blue and white tee locations for the par 70 challenge.

Jeff Allen of Wild Quail Golf and Country Club in Wyoming won the tournament with a 69-73-142 performance in blistering heat.

Golfers from upstate predominated among the players. Earl Dunnock and Mark Yoder Jr., competing out of The Rookery, and Richard Swearer from Bear Trap Dunes were the only golfers from Sussex County clubs.

Yoder tied for 20th with his 79-76-155. Dunnock's 159 total put him in a tie for 23rd. Swearer shot a pair of 86s for a tie for 47th among the 55 finishers.
