GFWC Women’s Club of Milton awards two scholarships

Mikayla Ockels and Alyssa Houghtling were selected as recipients of the GFWC Women’s Club of Milton 2016 educational scholarship award in the amount of $2,000. Ockels graduated fourth in her senior class at Sussex Central High School where she was a member of the National Honor Society all four years. She was one of 38 students chosen nationally to participate in the sixth science fair held at the White House in April 2016. As a member of FFA and 4-H, Ockels has received numerous awards, honors and recognitions for her excellence in science fairs, agricultural research and livestock exhibition. Ockels’ extensive résumé also includes countless community service, leadership and athletic achievements.

Ockels attended the GFWC Women’s Club of Milton President’s Luncheon  June 14 at the Rookery North, Milford. She spoke about her academic and career plans which will begin at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colo., in the fall. She plans to major in agribusiness and further her small businesses of egg production, goat raising and beekeeping after graduation.

Houghtling graduated from Sussex Tech where her area of study was athletic health care and physical therapy. She will attend the University of Delaware with a major in either athletic health care or nursing.

The GFWC Women’s Club of Milton is a member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, which is an international service organization dedicated to strengthening communities and enhancing the lives of others through volunteerism. The GFWC Milton Century Club meets at 1 p.m. the second Tuesday of the month September through June at Saint John the Baptist Episcopal Church on Federal Street in Milton. New members are always welcome to attend the meetings.
